I have loved cemeteries for as long as I can remember. Cemeteries are among the most fascinating places to visit in the world, wherever in the world you might find yourself.

In particular, I enjoy exploring the designs of their grounds while also investigating, photographing, writing about and just plain admiring other aspects found there: the architecture of their buildings, the statuary and other artwork on display, and epitaphs on grave markers that range from simple to simply incredible.

Cemeteries as a collective are sources of local history and they reflect the often changing culture and customs of their communities. From the micro-view prospective, individual graves represent lives lived well, not so well, long, tragically short or somewhere in between.

I advocate cemetery appreciation and preservation.  If ignored they can fall into ruin, as evidenced by so many disheartening stories about cemetery neglect and scandals in the news across the country these days.

Cemeteries are places to say goodbye and express our grief when we leave our loved ones to their eternal rest. They are also places to be cherished and experienced.  Showing love and respect to a cemetery is the same as bestowing the same on those who remain there when we leave.

These are some of the more important reasons why I use my background in journalism and photography to bring stories about cemeteries to public attention. I also "grave hunt" because it's a lot of fun, especially when doing it with some of my best friends (who I met, you guessed it, while exploring cemeteries!)
